A report from Macedonia’s leading television station, Sitel, claims that sources close to the government are planning to legalise cannabis in the tourist destinations of Ohrid and Struga.
In a purely economic play, the move would be designed to increase tourism and foreign currency reserves in a country that has only just changed its name officially to North Macedonia in preparation for entry into the EU. Ascension talks are scheduled to begin in June (although that could be hampered by the incumbent president’s refusal to sign laws featuring the new name)
Macedonia is one of the 31 European regions that currently allows medical cannabis, although only for four recognised conditions: HIV, MS, Epilepsy and Cancer. Nonetheless, the government has been facilitating medical cannabis companies, even the prime minister’s cousin, Trajce Zaev is involved.
